Job Description
Position Purpose:
The Wastewater Compliance Specialist is responsible for overseeing all aspects of regulatory compliance for 8 domestic wastewater treatment plants and collection systems, and the 3 industrial wastewater operations associated with the Haworth, Wyandotte, and Allendale New Street WTPs within the northern New Jersey service area. This role involves ensuring adherence to regulations set forth by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and local regulatory bodies. The Specialist will implement and monitor compliance requirements, conduct audits, and coordinate with plant managers to ensure that all operations meet regulatory standards.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Monitor compliance of the wastewater treatment plants and collection systems and the WTPs with NJDEP, EPA, and local regulations.
- Create/develop internal trending reports (i.e. Near Miss log, Compliance log, etc.) and trend data
- Conduct regular compliance audits and inspections at each facility.
- Coordinate with plant managers to ensure all operational aspects meet regulatory standards.
- Prepare and submit compliance reports to NJDEP, EPA, and other regulatory bodies.
- Prepare and submit permit applications and renewals.
- Develop sampling schedules and coordinate sample collection with laboratories to ensure monitoring requirements are adhered to from the applicable permit.
- Keep abreast of changes in regulations and inform relevant personnel of updates.
- Develop and implement training programs for plant staff on regulatory compliance.
- Address and resolve any compliance issues or violations.
- Assist in the development and revision of compliance policies and procedures.
- Provide support to the Operations teams in developing permit required SOPs and O&M documents as required.
- Serve as a point of contact for regulatory agencies and facilitate any required communication or coordination.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 1 - 3 years of experience.
- Experience in wastewater treatment and compliance, preferably within the state of New Jersey.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Familiarity with NJDEP, EPA, and local wastewater regulations.
- In-depth knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and regulatory compliance.
- Strong analytical skills for assessing compliance data and identifying potential issues.
- Proficiency in regulatory reporting and documentation.
- Ability to conduct thorough compliance audits and inspections.
- Excellent communication skills for liaising with regulatory agencies, plant managers, and staff.
- Capability to develop and implement compliance training programs for plant personnel.
Additional Information
Pay Range: $80000 to $90000 per year.

Pay and benefits for employees represented by a union are outlined in their collective bargaining agreement.
