Job Title: Formulation Research Scientist

JOB PURPOSE

The role of the Science & Technology team is to deliver breakthrough technologies and differentiated innovations to meet the needs and preferences of our consumers around the world. Within the Beauty & Personal Care division, we are building new, world-class capability to help us develop innovations that out-perform the competition and build equity for our leading brands.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced formulation/colloid scientist to join the Science & Technology Product Engineering team at Port Sunlight and the Materials Innovation Factory (Liverpool), to contribute to the on-going development and optimisation of product formulations for Beauty & Wellbeing and Personal Care.

The role requires strong team working capability across multi-disciplinary project teams. Ideally suited to an energetic, self-motivated, independent and resourceful research scientist with excellent people skills, and a desire to further develop their scientific skills. The successful candidate will be involved in a range of internal and external partnerships, both academic and industrial, targeting the development of new technologies and capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The role reports to a Research Formulation Manager and includes the following responsibilities:

  • Design, plan and conduct experiments for the development of new products that meet consumer requirements.
  • Use core formulation, colloidal science and physical characterisation understanding to investigate and design novel products
  • Build characterisation methods and investigate product microstructure and performance
  • Use structured approaches for capturing and analysing data with the ambition to create data driven models
  • Deliver high quality written reports and oral communications to the team and stakeholders.

ALL ABOUT YOU

  • MSc degree with relevant industrial R&D experience or PhD in physical chemistry, colloid science, materials science
  • Experience in formulation and processing of Beauty & Wellbeing and Personal Care products and characterisation of their microstructure.
  • Awareness of project management processes and delivering to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to develop strong scientific networks.
  • Experience in data handling, analysis including statistical methods is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of leading and/or working in multi-disciplinary teams is desirable.

Recruitment Fraud

Cyber criminals advertise fake job adverts with prestigious employers as a way of stealing information or even defrauding individuals out of money. In the most sophisticated cases, they will set up fake websites, which have a similar address to companies like Unilever. They even conduct fake telephone interviews and then offer candidates a role with the proviso they pay a fee for background checks or to cover work visa costs. These types of attacks are becoming more common as more people are looking for employment in the economic climate.

How is Unilever tackling this?

Many of Unilever’s recruitment sites publish a warning to candidates about recruitment fraud. The Cyber Security team also proactively scan for signs of people setting up fake Unilever sites and act to close them down.
